The Canine Good Citizen Program is a ten-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs.
This Level 2 CGC Course is designed to prepare dogs and their handlers to confidently understand, hone and meet the skills required for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test.
These same skills are very helpful for those interested in registering their dogs for Therapy Dog programs.
Dogs should have mastered the following abilities prior to starting this course: attention to owner around distractions, polite walking on leash, sit & down with a short stay, and recall (come) while tolerating other dogs and people.
Following completion of this course, dogs and their handlers that practice and dependably perform the exercises covered during this 6-week course should be set for a Canine Good Citizen Test. The Test is not included in this class, but will be scheduled shortly after completion of the class providing there are students ready to test.
The Canine Good Citizen Program is a ten-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs around other dogs and people.
This Level 1 CGC Course prepares dogs and their handlers (that have previously completed puppy training or other basic training) to more easily integrate and progress with the training skills needed for the Canine Good Citizen & Therapy Dog Skills Course (Level 2).
Dogs must have some basic skills prior to starting this course: attention to owner, ability to walk on a leash, sit & down, as well as be manageable around other dogs and people.
The course is structured to build reliability and more self-assurance around other dogs and people building on a dog’s previously learned foundation training. The more advanced training skills required for the AKC CGC Test will be introduced and practiced for greater dependability.
Some dogs and their handlers may be ready for the Canine Good Citizen Test following completion of this course, however, most will likely need the Level 2: Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Skills Course to be fully prepared for the CGC Test.
Scentwork is the hot new canine sport! Dogs naturally excel at it and it’s fun for the humans, too. It is a great way to build confidence and focus in dogs. Any dog can participate; from puppies to senior or retired dogs. Getting started the right way can make a huge difference in how quickly your dog will progress. In this class, you will learn about the basic concepts in searching for odor, proper use of equipment, how to handle odor without contamination, how to make and place hides, and how to teach your dog the importance of odor obedience. You will also learn how to make the search for scent extremely important to your dog.
Included in the cost of the course is a full scent kit complete with everything you will need to get up & running with your scentwork training.
BASIC OBEDIENCE includes Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Come, Walk on lead, Leave it & Take it Nicely as well as addressing house manners.
You can take this class with puppies as young as 3 months old, since we use positive training methods. However we recommend our Tuesday night Head Start Puppy class for puppies 6 months and younger.
