CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Sunday Date: 10/6/2019From: 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm  Room:Paws in Motion  Cost: $25
Trick training is a great way to teach your dog “how” to learn; gives you the chance to improve your timing & decision making; builds confidence in the under-confident dog; and channels the energy of over-exuberant dogs into positive behaviors that will delight you & impress your friends. We will be teaching some simple tricks to the dogs. You’ll get to start working on these in class but will have some homework to perfect them. We’ll be using clicker training, shaping, marking, capturing and luring. Not all dogs will do the same tricks in class but you’ll get to go home with an idea of how to work on them. Some tricks we could work on: Shake, Wave, Sit up, Weave Through Legs, Jump Into Arms, Stand on Hind Legs, Cross legs, Shame, Roll over, Bang, Spin, Walk Back, etc. We’ll take a vote, and also go from the dog’s preferences. Each person might work something different. Tricks are a great way to teach your dog how to LEARN! You can never go wrong with tricks so there’s no pressure to them. All the better for you both to enjoy!!!

The Canine Good Citizen Program is a ten-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs.

This Level 2 CGC Course is designed to prepare dogs and their handlers to confidently understand, hone and meet the skills required for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test.

These same skills are very helpful for those interested in registering their dogs for Therapy Dog programs.

Dogs should have mastered the following abilities prior to starting this course: attention to owner around distractions, polite walking on leash, sit & down with a short stay, and recall (come) while tolerating other dogs and people.

Following completion of this course, dogs and their handlers that practice and dependably perform the exercises covered during this 6-week course should be set for a Canine Good Citizen Test.  The Test is not included in this class.

We recommend that you take the Beyond Basic Obedience Course or the CGC Prep Course (Level 1) before taking this course.

More about CGC & Therapy Dogs:
The CGC Test is offered by the AKC and requires dogs to pass a 10 part examination that demonstrates their obedience skills around other dogs and people as well as their tolerance to being handled by strangers.
All dogs who pass a 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events.

Therapy dogs are dogs that visit schools, nursing homes, and hospitals, bringing a message of love and cheer.
Therapy dogs should have proper greeting manners, leash manners and be able to calmly tolerate dogs and strangers in new environments as well as some vigorous body handling.

To work as a therapy dog team, most organizations require dog and handler teams to pass an evaluation and / or pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification.

Thursday Tentatively scheduled for: 10/17, 10/24, 11/14, 11/21, 12/5 & 12/12/2019 From: 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The Canine Good Citizen Program is a ten-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs around other dogs and people.

This Level 1 CGC Course prepares dogs and their handlers (that have previously completed puppy training or other basic training) to more easily integrate and progress with the training skills needed for the Canine Good Citizen & Therapy Dog Skills Course (Level 2).

Dogs must have some basic skills prior to starting this course: attention to owner, ability to walk on a leash, sit & down, as well as be manageable around other dogs and people.

The course is structured to build reliability and more self-assurance around other dogs and people building on a dog’s previously learned foundation training. The more advanced training skills required for the AKC CGC Test will be introduced and practiced for greater dependability.

Some dogs and their handlers may be ready for the Canine Good Citizen Test following completion of this course, however, most will likely need the Level 2: Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Skills Course to be fully prepared for the CGC Test.
