SIX WEEK CLASSES Starting soon:

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN AND THERAPY SKILLS:Tuesday 6:00-7:00 pm Starting January 20th. Cost is $125 for the 6 sessions.
Therapy dogs are dogs that visit schools, nursing homes, and hospitals bringing a message of love and cheer. They should have proper greeting manners, leash manners and be able to tolerate dogs and strangers in their environment as well as some vigorous body handling. To work as therapy dogs, most organizations require teams to pass an evaluation or pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The CGC is offered by the AKC and requires dogs to pass a 10 part examination, demonstrating their obedience skills and tolerance to handling and strangers. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass a 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. Come learn the requirements for each of these examinations and hone your skills in preparation for them or just to practice good manners so your dog is welcome in the community. Balance and body awareness are key elements for the canine performance athlete.  They also offer valuable lessons for the dog that is insecure with its surroundings and unsure about unfamiliar things.  Whether you have a dog that needs to learn where its rear end starts for agility training or heel work, have a nervous dog that you’d like to help be braver, or simply want to stimulate your dog by playing with unfamiliar equipment, there’s something in this class for you! We will be playing with stools, ladders, balance disks, balance beams, blocks, and anything else we can think of!  This is a good introduction to capturing and shaping behaviors and play with unfamiliar objects.  The difficulty of the exercises will progress week to week, so you & your dog will be stimulated to advance in skill level while building good body awareness, balance skill & core strength.

This class is great for people looking for an activity for their energetic dog, or anyone interested in agility or for dogs already competing in agility that need to increase their body awareness, physical fitness or core strength.
This is also a good introduction to capturing and shaping behaviors and play with unfamiliar objects. Come join us for some fun sessions of body awareness play with your dog!

This will be a very hands-on and active class, so please be sure to bring LOTS of yummy soft treats and a hungry dog!

TRICKS!!!: Sundays 3:15 pm starting August 17th, Cost is $85 for the four-week class. Several spaces still available.

Trick training is a great way to teach your dog “how” to learn; gives you the chance to improve your timing & decision making; builds confidence in the under-confident dog; and channels the energy of over-exuberant dogs into positive behaviors that will delight you & impress your friends.

The first two weeks, we will be teaching some simple tricks to the dogs. You’ll get to start working on these in class but will have some homework to perfect them. We’ll be using clicker training, shaping, marking, capturing and luring. Not all dogs will do the same tricks in class but you’ll get to go home with an idea of how to work on them. Some tricks we could work on: Shake, Wave, Sit up, Weave Through Legs, Jump Into Arms, Stand on Hind Legs, Cross legs, Shame, Roll over, Bang, Spin, Walk Back, etc. We’ll take a vote, and also go from yours and your dog’s preferences. Each person might work something different.

The second two weeks, we will progress your training by doing more complex tricks — adding props, working on chains of tricks, duration of the trick, distance, distraction and more. Tricks are a great way to teach your dog how to LEARN! You can never go wrong with tricks so there’s no pressure to them – all the better for you both to enjoy!!! Even if you have already done some trick training with your dog there’s always more and some unique twists that can be added. Open to any dog.
Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA

SUNDAY WORKSHOPS
Cost is $25 for these single-session workshops.

4:30 pm Sunday, August 17th – GOT RECALL? Does your dog come when called? Just one space available.

You want your dog to respond when you call every time and under any situation so you must first build up their desire to come to you. In this workshop we will use PREMACK’s Principle (If you do what I want, you will get what you want) in many games and exercises to teach your dog to WANT to come to you. Learn how to use your dog’s natural tendencies to your recall’s advantage! This Workshop is open to dogs of all levels and ages.

Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA

12:15 -1:45 pm Sunday, August 24th INTRO TO RALLY: Cost is $30 for the workshop. Several spaces still available.
Try out the sport of Rally Obedience. Rally consists of easy & interesting obedience exercises strung together in a “course”. It is a great way to practice heeling as well as a super first step into the world of competitive dog sports since the Novice level is performed 100% on leash.
In this workshop several Rally Signs will be explained & practiced and then combined into short sequences or courses.
Instructor: Jackie Kurzban. Pre-requisite: Dogs must be able to sit, down, stay and have some basic heeling.

____________________

4:30 pm Sunday, August 24th – FANTASTIC FOCUS Just three spaces available.

Focus should be about staying connected with you dog and working effectively as a team. It is not only about teaching your dog eye contact but about a mutual awareness and enjoyment of teamwork with your partner. It requires that both members of the team are aware and connected with each other so they are ready to engage at any given time, and that your dog learns to redirect away from distractions so he can focus back to you. And YES at times, it should be about eye contact. Focus is just like any other skill. It can be taught, developed and reinforced. In this workshop we’ll work on some relationship building exercises, eye contact exercises, and also some interesting challenges to put your teamwork to the test. Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA

____________________

4:30 pm Sunday, August 31st – FUN PARTY GAMES Several spaces still available.

Need a little motivation to practice your dog’s obedience skills? Then come join us for an hour of fun and training all while playing games with your dog. Let’s put some fun into practicing basic manners and self-control and add some “real life stress” to our training in the form of friendly competition and peer pressure. (I.e. Tic Tac Toe, How Far Can You Go?, Shark Attack…) Games will be selected based on number of participants. The more the merrier!!! Open to all dogs with basic obedience skills (sit, down, come, stay). Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA

____________________

4:30 pm Sunday, September 7th – DISTRACTION CHALLENGE: Games and Exercises for Working Through DISTRACTIONS Just three spaces available.

Distractions are an unavoidable element of a performance dog’s career – in fact, not even your couch potato can avoid them! Dealing with distractions and learning to work through them, is what takes training to a whole new level and what will “cement” your training and help your dog generalize your cues. Come and learn the 3 D’s of Distractions and how to apply them to your training. Put this new knowledge to the test by challenging your dog in some fun games and exercises. Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA
