BUILDING BLOCKS FOR STELLAR PERFORMANCE DOGS

– Building a strong working relationship through focus & control exercises;
– Creating enthusiasm & motivation including building their natural toy- and play-drives;
– Developing good balance & body awareness to maximize athleticism & minimize injuries over a long career; and

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN AND THERAPY SKILLS:
Therapy dogs are dogs that visit schools, nursing homes, and hospitals bringing a message of love and cheer. They should have proper greeting manners, leash manners and be able to tolerate dogs and strangers in their environment as well as some vigorous body handling. To work as therapy dogs, most organizations require teams to pass an evaluation or pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The CGC is offered by the AKC and requires dogs to pass a 10 part examination, demonstrating their obedience skills and tolerance to handling and strangers. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass a 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. Come learn the requirements for each of these examinations and hone your skills in preparation for them or just to practice good manners so your dog is welcome in the community.

Training with Distractions  Wednesday, 2:30-3:30 pm; For those interested in competing in the Obedience ring or just training to that level.  Prerequisite:  Beyond Basic Obedience or approval of instructor.

You’ve gone to class, you’ve practiced at home and you went to the dog show confident you were ready. But there were people watching, doors opening and closing, judges, stewards and worse – there were other DOGS!    Want to work on those pesky distractions?  Come to the Training with Distractions class.  This class is good for all dogs that have had Beyond Basic obedience training -they need to know what sit, down, come and stay means even if they do not always do what you asked for. You will be able to work at the level you and your dog are ready for – the class is suitable for the novice through open level and can proof some of your utility skills.  Although signs won’t be used, the activities can also help you prep for rally.

The class will include heeling, turning left/right/around, sit and down stays, sit and stands for exam and other exercises all with various levels of distractions including people, other dogs and other distractions you would encounter at a dog show.  You can work at your own level – some dogs might be off leash, others not.

A typical class would follow the general layout:1-Sit and down stays.  Handler can be anywhere from just in front of dog to out of sight.
2-Heeling as a group, either in a circle or in line.  Includes 1/4 turns, circle right/left, about turns etc. Dogs can be taken off lead if ready.
3-Sit / stand for exam.  Those handler that can leave their dogs will examine each dog. Can be done with handler at side of dog or as in trial.
4-Recall-done down the center of two lines, every other dog or criss cross depending upon class size and composition.
5-Finishes will be added to the recall but not every time.
6-Figure eight proofing will be done as a weaving exercise between the other dogs.
7-Games like tic tac toe and musical chairs can be added as well.
Because the exercises are done as a group, dog/handler teams get plenty of practice.
