HEAD START PUPPY CLASS: Tuesdays 7:15-8:15 pm. Starting March 3rd. Six-week course, $125 – FOUR SPOTS LEFT
Help your pup develop into a calm, capable adult through training in self-control, drive-building, basic obedience and exposure to new sounds, surfaces, objects, people and dogs.  First class (March 3rd) is an orientation for the humans (no dogs).  Next 5 classes are for humans & dogs.  Household members are welcome as well. Not your typical puppy class! It’s packed with content and activity to get your puppy started right.  Class includes basic Obedience (Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Come, Leave It, Walking On Lead and developing Attention) as well as an introduction to a few agility obstacles and other objects.  The Orientation prepares you for the training that will begin at home & continue in class starting week 2 & is your opportunity to ask questions about problem issues like jumping, barking, chewing & housebreaking.
Instructor: Sheyla Gutierrez, CPDT-KA.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

FRIDAY, September 21 at 6:00 pm:  GOT RECALL?

If you want your dog to respond when you call every time and under any situation you must first build up their desire to come to you.  In this workshop we will use PREMACK’s Principle (If you do what I want, you will get what you want) in many games and exercises to teach your dog to WANT to come to you.  Learn how to use your dog’s natural tendencies to your recall’s advantage! This Workshop is open to dogs of all levels and ages. Limited to 6-8 Working Teams.  Please bring lots of tiny treats that your dog can easily swallow.

FRIDAY, September 21 at 7:15 pm:   WHISTLE WHILE YOU WORK: Games and Exercises for Working Through DISTRACTIONS

Distractions are an unavoidable element of a performance dog’s career – in fact, not even your couch potato can avoid them! Dealing with distractions and learning to work through them, is what takes training to a whole new level and what will “cement” your training and help your dog generalize your cues.  Come and learn the 3 D’s of Distractions and how to apply them to your training. Put this new knowledge to the test by challenging your dog in some fun games and exercises.

FRIDAY, September 21 at 8:30 pm:   TRAINING GAMES
Has your training gotten stale?  Do you find obedience boring and find it hard to motivate yourself to work with your dog?  Do you enjoy having a good time with your dog?  If so, come & join us for some fun Training Games.  Ever play Tic-Tac-Toe with your dog?  It can be done! You’ll find yourself laughing and having a good time & yet your dog will be learning valuable skills.  Any dog that has been through a puppy or Basic class will be able to participate.
SATURDAY, September 22nd at 5:30 pm:  Polishing up your Obedience for Competition
Competitive Obedience is a game of points.  One of the biggest areas where points can be lost is in heeling, but there’s also Fronts, Finishes, Stays, Retrieving, etc.  This workshop will definitely address heeling: attention, footwork, pivots & more but there will also be time to work on fronts, finishes, proofing of stays, retrieving, etc.  Not all dogs may need to work on the same things, but you can request an area to work on as the time allows.  This will be an hour to an hour & a half workshop and will cost $30.  For dogs that have been through a Level 3 Obedience class or are preparing to compete.
SATURDAY, September 22nd at 7:45 pm:  TREIBALL
          –  Treibball, an exciting new dog sport that is very popular in Europe, combines agility, herding, and problem-solving in an energetic ball chase that dogs love! Treiball teaches teamwork, impulse control, attention to hand and verbal signals, and much more! It also provides a good outlet for those energetic dogs and a way to keep fit for all dogs!  Check out this YouTube video of a 10 year old dog doing some of the beginning steps of Treiball. This will be an hour to an hour & a half workshop and will cost $30.

SUNDAY, September 23rd at 4:30 pm:  HOUNDS ABOUT TOWN
NEW TIME!  4:30-5:30 pm; practice your dog’s good manners in the real world. Cost $25 per session, typically held twice a month.  A great class for CU graduates & others just wishing to train & meet other dog lovers.  Email us to be added to the notification list for the next class dates.
FRIDAY, October 5th at 6:30 pm:  “It All Begins at the Startline” – Elements of a Good Startline Stay
          – The sport of dog agility has become a fast and intense game, where milliseconds make a huge differrence. Having a dog that responds to your direction is essential and as we all know, the race starts long before your dog crosses the startline.  Your dog must be focused and ready to go, wait until released to give you that valuable lead-out advantage, and explode out of his startline position at maximum speed, ready to chase after you and perform the course.  Having a startline behavior and routine that reinforces your control and is appropriate for your team can make a big difference. This workshop will cover exercises to work on impulse control and to train a solid startline stay, as well as developing a routine that will enhance your performance. When to lead out, and when you’re better off just starting with your dog? Proofing stays and improving the response to your release cue as well as focusing forward on the obstacle vs. handler focus.
FRIDAY, October 5th at 7:45 pm: Where’s My Tail?
-Think Pilates for Pooches:  Balance and body awareness are key elements for the canine performance athlete. They also offer valuable lessons for the dog that is insecure with its surroundings and unsure about unfamiliar things. Whether you have a dog that needs to learn where its rear end starts for agility training or heel work, have a nervous dog that you’d like to help be braver, or simply want to stimulate your dog by playing with unfamiliar equipment, there’s something in this class for you! We will be playing with stools, ladders, balance disks, balance beams, blocks, and anything else we can think of! This is also a good introduction to capturing and shaping behaviors and play with unfamiliar objects. Come join us for a fun evening of body awareness play with your dog!
